Diagnostic ultrasound in neuromuscular diseases

Ultrasound is a tool that can be used to give structural and physiological information about nerves and muscles. It uses and analyzes sound waves produced by a transducer and echoed back from the interface of tissues of different acoustic impedance. It is a painless procedure that complements traditional EMG/NCS and enhances our capacity to diagnose conditions from carpal tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome to various demyelinating inflammatory neuropathies such as CIDP, MMN to certain hereditary neuropathies such as Charcot Marie Tooth disease. Ultrasound can also be used to monitor the effect of therapy on such conditions. At Clinique Neuro-Outaouais it is used in conjunction with EMG /NCS to diagnose and monitor various pathologies affecting peripheral nerves and muscles.

Process

  • Patients must be referred by a physician.
  • Prior to tests, ensure extremities are clean and free of cream and lotion.
  • EMG includes a consultation by a neurologist.
