Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation treatment. In psychiatry, it is used for treatment resistant depression and may also be considered for certain other mental health conditions. At Clinique Neuro-Outaouais, rTMS treatment for depression is offered as a non-drug therapy when appropriate, after a review of the patient’s diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, medication use, and response to other treatments.
Some patients may require a modified non-diagnostic MRI at MRI St. Joseph so our team can use neuronavigation. Sessions usually last 40 to 50 minutes and are repeated 5 times a week for 4 to 6 weeks. Patients remain awake in a reclining chair while magnetic pulses are delivered through a magnetic coil placed against the scalp, often causing a tapping or knocking sensation. Mild headache, scalp discomfort, or temporary pain can occur. Unlike electroconvulsive therapy, rTMS does not require anesthesia and is not associated with memory loss.
rTMS uses repeated magnetic pulses to stimulate nerve cells in the superficial layers of the brain. In depression care, treatment targets brain activity in the brain involved in mood regulation.
Over several weeks, this stimulation may help support neuroplasticity, which is the brain’s ability to adapt. For some patients with major depressive disorder, rTMS for depression may lead to symptom relief, significant improvement, or remission. Results vary, and response cannot be guaranteed.
